Nula Soy’s journey began a long time ago, and was inspired by my Grandparents. My Grandmother, raised in Great Budworth, Cheshire was a true country girl. Looking back, I now realise that her approach to natural living was so ahead of its time. She made and used natural remedies and was a keen organic grower. Along with my Grandfather in the 1950s, she bought some land and established a plant nursery and florist along with two of my aunts. This business still thrives today.
Growing up in this wonderful and naturally scented environment was certainly my inspiration for Nula Soy. My sister and I recall endless sunny days playing in fields of flowers and helping to water the many plants that grew in our Grandfather’s greenhouses. A favourite treat was accompanying him to the early morning flower market in Manchester. I can still remember the scents so vividly.
The benefits of natural organic living has been intrinsic to my life, and in my 20s I developed my passion for essential oils that remains until this day. I continue to learn as much as I can about different oils and their therapeutic properties. I have studied aromatherapy and perfume making in great detail in order to understand more about this beautiful art. I cannot think of many days when I have not used essential oils for one reason or another, especially since having my children.
Why candles? I feel that scented candles are both a wonderful and popular gift to give or receive. Lighting a candle can have so many different meanings and benefits, such as remembrance or love, and can uplift or calm your mood. With life being so hectic, I am convinced that candles are the perfect antidote to 24/7 living. They connect us to a slower pace of life once enjoyed long ago.
I only use carefully blended formulas of 100% pure certified organic essential oils, in natural soy wax from North America. Blending the oils for Nula Soy has been an inspirational joy. I decided to only use a small number of oils in each fragrance because as I developed the blends, I discovered that my focus group and customers simply loved being able to pick out the fragrances of the individual essential oils.
In 2012, I founded Nula Soy Limited in Bollington, Cheshire, with the aim of creating and producing a range of exceptional English-made soy wax candles, fragranced using only 100% pure certified organic essential oils. I have endeavoured to maintain the highest integrity in all aspects of my sourcing, from raw materials to packaging. It was a given to only use organic essential oils as they are in my opinion, the finest fragranced oils in the world, and their use promotes considerate farming methods.
I have been privileged to work with some very talented professionals who believe in Nula Soy. In particular, designer Andrew Greenwood, the founder of Visual Sense, whose creativity has been incredible. Lecturer and aromatherapist, Anne Delooze, has patiently and willingly advised me regarding the countless blends I have created over the last two years.
I exclusively source almost all of my oils from a wonderful family firm, which has specialised in essential oils for over 150 years.
We currently offer six unique fragrances:
Elizabethan Gardens, England
Las Pampas, Argentina
Maui Beach, Hawaii
Blue Mountains, Australia
… And more fragrances are soon to follow!
I have endeavoured to select individual oils that belong to each location with the addition of a little poetic licence.
I was determined from the outset to have an ‘English’ candle as it seemed fitting to do so. Like many people all over the world, I find our Elizabethan period in history extremely fascinating, so I took a great deal of inspiration from these times. I immersed myself within my favourite Elizabethan setting, Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire in order to convey the essence of this location to my designer, Andrew. For the candle’s fragrance I was fortunate to find a local organic farm that creates the most amazing English Lavender and Roman Chamomile. I was absolutely delighted by this. For me, Nula Soy’s Elizabethan Gardens candle represents all the facets of the most gentlest love.
I have similar stories and experiences associated with all of my fragrances, which have taken many months of thorough but enjoyable research in order to perfect them, so as to evoke each beautiful location.
Design and Packaging
Our designers were tasked with creating the branding for Nula Soy, the packaging and the accompanying website – www.nulasoy.com. This was an immersive design experience, reflecting the brand through every touchpoint – the packaging being perhaps the most critical.
The Nula Soy brand marque has a natural organic character, to fully reflect the character of the candles. We developed a marque that had both a seed-like (organic/natural) and also flame-like (candle) quality. The left-hand side of the marque always carries the main brand colours – brown and green to reflect the organic qualities of the brand. The colours on the right-hand side of the marque are matched to the fragrance colour. As an identity it’s quite fluid and adaptable.
All illustrations were created in-house and were developed in close partnership, so that we could accurately portray the fragrance of each candle. The fragrance elements are visually portrayed within each candle’s unique illustration. We’ve used both literal and metaphoric visual clues for each fragrance. For example, for Maui Beach we included illustrations of both the Pikake flower and also the Moon as this is the time when the flower’s fragrance is released.
The unique colours of the glassware were created to closely match those within each candle’s accompanying illustration - it was an iterative process to get the colours just right. The glassware itself was sourced from Bavaria, then colour-coated and branded in the UK.
Size and Scope
Rather than use standard glassware, we decided that given the beauty of our fragrances, we created a range of inspiring glassware to reflect Nature’s bounty of colours found at each of the candle’s destinations.
A totally unique aspect of our glassware is that they are available in two beautiful colours to complement or blend with different décor. We believe that this is a fabulous aspect of Nula Soy’s candle range.
Furthermore, our candles are also available in three different sizes - Alto, Mezzo and Piccolo. Our beautiful crystal glassware is made to the world’s highest ecological standards in Bavaria.
As an aside, we made a wonderful discovery when we lit our candles. At night they produce a very special lighting effect. As the candle wax slowly melts it reveals the gently glowing candlelight through the glassware. It reminded us of ‘Midsummer Eve’ a painting by Edward Robert Hughes, where a beautiful young girl stumbles upon a magical gathering of fairies, all with little lanterns.
And finally …
We have loved every single aspect of our journey whilst creating our candle range. It is most certainly our hope that you will love Nula Soy candles as much as we do!
