BODY AND SOUL

For a beautiful, glowing complexion, take an holistic approach to skin care, says naturopath Lula Braithwaite.

Exercise
Exercise boosts the flow of blood through the skin's micro-circulation, feeding the skin with nutrients and oxygen.  A lack of exercise can leave you body sluggish and skin dull, lifeless or prone to outbreaks.  Recent research also suggests that poor micro-circulation can also increase skin aging.  Even 20 minutes of brisk walking each day can help.  A programme of regular exercise, tailored to your lifestyle and body, can reap huge rewards for your skin.

On the Spot
If you suffer from outbreaks, good skincare is essential.  But the location of spots can indicate an underlying problem.  Spots on the forehead and nose can be a sign of poor digestion; for clearer skin take a psyllium husk supplement, drink plenty of water and cut down on bread and dairy products.  Spots on the chin are a common symptom of hormonal imbalance and women often find they appear around the time of their period.  Spots on the cheeks, meanwhile, are atributed to a "kidney" imbalance in Chinese medicine and can indicate the need for detox.

Stress
Stress can lead to a number of skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, aging and dull sallow skin.  Supplementing your diet with vitamins B5 and C or taking a herbal supplement such as Rhodiola Rosea, can help.  So can regular exercise, taking flower essences (like the Bach Flower remedies), a soak in a warm salt bath or making a little time for yourself each day.  Skin care products containing vitamins A (in rosehip oil and calendula), C and E (in argan oil) can help calm the effects of stress in the skin.

Diet
Essential fatty acids, found in oily fish and nuts and seeds, keep skin soft and well moisturised and studies have shown they are helpful for skin conditions such as rosacea and eczema.  Collagen makes up 70 per cent of our skin and keeps it firm, taught and young looking; vitamin C and bioflavonoids (often found in the pith of citrus fruits) aid and support collagen integrity in the skin.

Pollution
Each day our skin faces a whole host of environmental "pollutants", from exhaust fumes to UV radiation.  Using an anti-oxidant cream under sunscreen when on holiday can help reduce sun damage.  Anti-oxidants, taken as a supplement or applied in a skin cream, can also protect skin from aging caused by other forms of environmental damage.  Brightly coloured fruit and vegetabels are particularly rich in these skin-loving nutrients.
