Our family had a whole meadow of madaras, known in English as cleavers: green flowering plants with tiny white blossoms and starry leaves - "sparkling leaves", as my grandmother would say - in front of the house, full of bees. The cleavers had been there when Grandmother was still small; her mother used the flowers to dye worsted wool bright red.
It was there that I, as a small child, learnt not to be scared of dark, to mow grass and drink milk fresh from the cow...just recently I found out that my friends from abroad have never drunk fresh milk...
Then at only 11 years of age, I arrived from the Riga city with my lips painted - a real lady! Grandmother told me to wash it off and to not make a fool of myself, such a child.
I cried, because at 11 years of age I didn't consider myself to be a small child, but a big girl! Grandmother understood. The next morning she poured a cup of curds' whey into the wash tub and told me to wash my face with it, to get pretty. As for my hair - she told me to wash it in birch sap, so that it would grow long and strong...
It was only recently that I realised my grandmother was right. I owe her a lot. Not only for my happy childhood in the countryside, but for all the natural beauty secrets she taught me.
